In the matter of oppression and liberation, there is no neutral ground. Either we fight against oppression, or we provide maintenance to the status quo. Systems of oppression depend on the ignorance and apathy of both the oppressed and oppressor to persist and become more powerful. I want to provide my students with the type of education that allows them to develop the skills they need to dismantle the systems of oppression that keep them and their loved ones from achieving their full potential. My students and their families have taught me that a liberating education is possible when teachers fuse rigorous instruction with social justice content. When students master rigorous content while simultaneously learning to recognize injustices around them, they develop their critical consciousness. Eventually, they can use their knowledge to establish more equitable systems in their communities.
