Applied Computer Science
Funded Mar 27, 2018This project has supported all of our students in ways that have opened the doors for STEAM opportunities not only in the classroom but also within all school grounds. Through our robotics kits and circuit boards, we've created learning experiences that enhance the opportunities for collaboration among teams and groups to problem solve and display opportunities for a growth mindset. The creativity within the lego sets and circuit boards have brought relevant opportunities to learn about what potential world of work exits out there. This adds to the level of communication that supports our English Language learners giving directions, following directions, and using high tiered vocabulary. These tools are serving as a lasting impact not only for our students, but now our entire school as our 6th graders share these experiences within our Maker Space. Thank you to all who invested in the well being of Lilian J. Rice Elementary.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Golden State Fund and 5 other donors.Going Beyond the World Wide Web
Funded Dec 20, 2016Thank you so much for donating to our project of "Going Beyond the World Wide Web." Ever since we cracked opened the first Google Chromebook, the level of excellence and professionalism has elevated within the work ethic of all the students. In addition, it has made an impact to influence other teachers to partake in what Google Chromebooks have to offer our students. I am ecstatic on the level of engagement the students will have in sharing their thoughts with the world through their blogs, as well as collaborating on Edmodo, and lastly opportunities to create and produce multimedia presentations and much much more.”

Physical Education & Representations
Funded Aug 3, 2016Thank you to all of you that have invested in the future of my classroom! One specific project that we've worked on is supporting a student that I have who is autistic and has Asperges. He's created a Becoming characters for our 3D printer, and his engagement has been nothing but up to par. This has served as a level of motivation to complete his work, socialize with his peers, and access to something that he's never worked with before.
Another story is a whole class story. Our class has been engaged in playing relay tic-tac-toe races that allows them to run, think, problem solve, and strategies to win their game. It's truly been remarkable to see the students think and react holistically during our physical education block.
Our next project is a big one, and that is giving my students access to consistent technology devices of which we've realized that it is through Google Chromebooks that they can accomplish a lot. We've embedded the use of Khan Academy, Blogging, Edmodo (Facebook for Education), Microsoft Office, and CODE.org into our curriculum. Our class is serving as a model for the 21st Century Classroom and showing our city that we can be FutureReady regardless of socio-economic differences in our region. Closing the gap to educational technology has never been so easy and that's because of you!”

Robo Resources & Athletics
Funded Jul 23, 2014Thank you so much for your investment to our class. My students were stoked that they didn't have to deal with reading paper copies of "Bud, Not Buddy" these past two quarters. They were excited to have the opportunity to take them home and read a long with an audio book that I made for them.
My students were engaged beginning from the English language learners who learned how to distinguish point of view, state an argument, and compare the life of Bud to Steve Jobs. Just as important of giving my EL's access to the vocabulary, the class discussions were so rich. Several classes we discussed the impact of socioeconomic diversity and inequality among different races during the Great Depression. We were able to dialog if we see that in our current era.
Because of your investment, my class had access to self monitor their reading. We're looking forward to dive into our new book that you helped purchased entitled "Flush." Again, thank you!”

Influencing the Next Einstein!
Funded Oct 6, 2013When my students saw that all of you had given us access to use digital microscopes, use of the Leap Motion, and the accessories for our science unit they were ecstatic. Their responses were simply how special they felt to know that "complete strangers" believed in their education.
The students used (and will continue) to use the resources for their Gallery of Experts that took place a few weeks ago before our winter break. They learned the process of observations, but rather than students sharing a microscope they were able to discuss a single view of different sample slides. The Leap Motion has taken the stage of being the class favorite. Students immediately adapted to the use of a hands-free motion detector to dissect the anatomy of a frog.
This project boosted my teaching, along with the learning of the students because it allowed all of us to see the value of invested individuals like yourself. During one of our observation lessons, my principal came into observe and part of his feedback included, "The students are engaged in their learning. That's important!" When the students are engaged and focused in their learning, it allows me to be a facilitator and ask good questions upon their own observations.
I can't thank you enough to the investment in this project. I'm in awe of how much you believe in my career, but more importantly making a difference in education.”

Mr. Garcia
