  • Blazing Fast Internet for All Part 2

    Funded Oct 15, 2022

I really wanted to take a few minutes to thank you for your generosity! I have completed 95% of the work as I showed in the pictures. All I have to do is tie up all the cable under the tables. The internet speeds have increased from about 25 mbps (I also have 30 devices to about 450 mbps! Websites load up in a flash! My students have already noticed the difference! All the ethernet switches linked up beautifully and the cables linked everything up perfectly. I was even able to update the OS on the Macs which is something that was extremely difficult to do over wifi because of all the devices. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cortes

  • Even Kindergartners Can Code!

    Funded Feb 25, 2022

Students in my class have finished a coding unit where they learned about coding on the computers first, then they started applying their knowledge to the Botley robots and the Kinderbots. They started with just learning how to code each, then they moved on to creating code to complete challenges and getting through mazes. Seeing the joy in their faces and knowing that they are applying prior knowledge is a great feeling. I look forward to June where conditions will allow us to use a bigger space such as the playground!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Cortes

The materials I am requesting such as the Kinderbots, Spheros, and Botleys will go a long way into teaching coding in a hands on way. I use programs like Code.org and Scratch Jr in class. The goal is to use these materials as a way of displaying and presenting what students have learned. I plan on creating challenges (mazes) where students will work in teams to solve. While this project will not directly be used at home, the goal is that they help inspire students to continue building at home! There are many free resources and programs available for home use I want to inspire students to go home and brag about what they have learned to their parents, which in turn will help get the ball rolling into more coding fun at home!
