Imagine a group of fourth graders sitting around a carpet watching a popular movie based on a book they just spent the last 5-6 weeks reading together critically and taking ownership of their learning. That is exactly what my book club is about. Reading is a subject that, let's face it, a lot of children around fourth grade detest. My goal is to bring back the love for reading my students never had, lost, or want to kindle again. I will do this by allowing them to do what they love to do and that is to watch movies. In our club, students will spend weeks reading and gathering together once a week to take turns leading, discussing, and thinking critically about things like author's purpose, plot, setting, character changes and interactions, imagery, figurative language and more. Their reward after weeks of hard work and fun reading the book will be to watch the Hollywood version as we enjoy our treats and juice boxes. We will then compare and contrast, discuss and debate the pros and cons of the movie as compared to the book. Reading is a skill that most people neglect and hate, but it doesn't have to be that way. Children can learn to love it and continue to grow their love for reading throughout their lifetime. I know that through this club many of our students will come to love reading. Help us reach our goal and fall in love with reading again.
