Presidential Aspirations For All Of Our Kippsters!
Funded Jan 26, 2012It is so important for students to have role models that they aspire to be like and no matter your politics, you cannot deny how powerful President Obama is as a role model for students in our urban schools. Our students are amazingly interested in the path that the President took to the highest office in the land, and the story they read is one of perseverance, community and the power of a great education.
It is great to see that our students are really able to see that barriers to achievement can be overcome be anyone, from any place, no matter where they have started out.
Thank you so much for contributing to the future success of some terrific young people!”

CARVing Out a Great Future as Scientists!
Funded Nov 4, 2011push It is so powerful to see students embrace their culture in such a powerful way! Because social studies and science are often neglected in lower-achieving schools, many of our students have little idea of the amazing achievements their ancestors have accomplished. But in our class, with our focus on social studies, science AND reading, we are discovering incredible things! Of course, George Washington Carver is one of the most amazing figures we meet and our students marvel at his numerous accomplishments. You can almost see the bar of expectation raising in class and our students ush to meet it.
Thank you for providing us with the tools to make this happen!”

Mr. Buck
Space Sparks Their Imaginations!
Funded Oct 31, 2011I wish I could post 100 pictures from this trip! I wish you could have watched the IMAX movies with us! I wish you could have ridden on the shuttle launch simulator with us! I wish you could have walked under the rocket graveyard with us! It was an incredible day that this letter and six pictures will never be able to truly capture.
I am just constantly floored when I see how curious students are and by how eager they are to learn when they are truly inspired, and Kennedy brought all of this out in our students. The smiles, the laughs, and the questions! Oh my! The QUESTIONS!!! All of these signals were in abundance last week and all of them let me know that we had an amazingly successful day!
Thank you so much for providing this experience to us!”

Mr. Buck

Funded Nov 7, 2011It is amazing to see what happens when you put books in front of kids that the are deeply invested in! Lower readers work like they have never worked before. Strong readers take a leadership role and push themselves to investigate further. It is just fantastic to watch what happens when students can see themselves in what they are reading.
The biographies of Zora Neale Hurston that you provided have turned these miracles for our students. Our boys are excited to hear about an African-American artist that made a massive impact, and our girls are thrilled to read about a true role model that they can emulate as they grow and mature.
Thank you so much!”

A Rebellion Born of Desperation
Funded Oct 5, 2011The Nat Turner books that were donated to our class have made for one of the best units I have ever seen! The kids were 100% engaged at all times and poured their heart into debating whether this controversial figure was a hero, or a villain.
The pictures you see are from our culminating debate for the unit and it was really cool to hear the depth of detail our students were able to put in their speeches thanks to your donation. I have never seen students so excited to do difficult reading and to write long persuasive speeches. It was great!
Thank you for providing the tools for an amazing unit!”

A River Running Through It (My Class that is...)
Funded Sep 22, 2011It's happening again....
Students are transfixed. Hands are up. The buzz has started. Yup, the river tank is set up and it must be time to bring science to life in my classroom!
Once again, the river tank has been set up in room 133 and the students are able to see the relevance of all the science we have been learning this year. They see the applications and they want to explore new ones.
The formula seems remarkably easy, yet it is real and so effective. Just put a tank like this one in a classroom, and just watch the fish, and the students, do the rest!
Thank you Disney!”

Immigration: The Story of How This Country Was Built
Funded Aug 19, 2011The books that we received for our class have become a great part of our vibrant learning community. What I really like about these books is that they are about a topic, immigration, that is really controversial in our neck of the woods. Right. Wrong. Whatever your position, it is very powerful for our students to be engaged in these debates. Such critical thinking skills are the key to our future being filled with solutions, not just problems.
It is also great to receive support from Loews. This economic client has been really tough and I have noticed a drop in individual giving, so it is great to see that business partners are stepping up to help our classrooms. My students and I are truly grateful.
Thank you!”

I Can Put The Whole World On Their Desk!
Funded Jun 30, 2011deliveredAs a teacher it is so valuable to have the whole world available to my students!
So far, we have learned about all the continents in the world, the 50 states, how to use maps, and endangered species, all of which our atlases have played a major role in. It is exciting to see how comfortable the kids have become with the book and how adept they are at using it.
Which is all well and good...
But! The coolest thing is how excited these kids are about the rest of the world and how curious they are to explore the world! This curiosity is what we shoot for as teachers, and boy, have these books deleivered!
Thank you so much!”

Funded Jun 24, 2011How do you take 100 sixth graders on a world tour? Turns out, it is surprisingly easy when you get some amazing books, books filled with exciting pictures and interesting facts. All you have to do is give the kids some time to explore the books and their tremendous imaginations will do the rest.
What is so great about these books, besides the world tour, is the opportunity for genuine independent learning. Since the kids are so interested and invested in these books, I can design lessons that provide them with chances to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, which we all know is the greatest possible outcome for our students.
Thank you so much for this freedom! ”

Funded Jul 6, 2011provedWhich is more popular in my class? Candy? Or DK Eyewitness Books? The answer might surprise you!
Well, the answer is still candy, but the vote is much closer than you might guess. :-)
I was a little nervous about having to teach world history this year, but as usual, the scholars at my school have proven me wrong by diving into the subject with tremendous enthusiasm.
As we begin our world tour, the DK Eyewitness Books we received have been the hottest books in school as students strive to build up their background knowledge on these new and intriguing places. It is quite a relief to know that these scholars are going to be able to push their own learning forward this year because of these books!
Thank you!”
