"How do we get our reluctant readers to read?" Our school library program is determined to find answers to this question. We know what our students like and what they don't. Most of our current library collection caters to those students who already love to read. We are hoping to grow our collection to include books that will interest students who tend to avoid the hard work of reading. High-interest, low-readability books engage reluctant readers and preserve their dignity while they practice reading skills. We often hear students who struggle to read saying things like, "But I don't want to read those baby books!" Our mission is to put into the hands of these students books that they will feel excited and proud to be reading. We want to purchase books with plenty of visual cues to support their understanding, fewer words on the page while they build stamina, and most importantly, content that interests them and invites them to share what they are reading with their peers and teachers. This project is requesting several series of graphic novels recommended for reluctant readers in elementary school, along with books showcasing relevant athletes and pop culture icons. We believe that if we can get these books into the hands of our reluctant readers, they will show greater willingness to read, and through increased practice, will show remarkable growth in their reading skills.
