One of the most powerful tools to push social change is the arts (I.e., Music, poetry, theater, film, and art). When young people are involved with the arts, something changes in their lives. Through engagement with the arts, young people can better begin life-long journeys of developing their capabilities and contributing to the world around them. The arts teach young people how to learn by giving them the first step: the desire to learn. It empowers them to identify with their social identity. It opens their minds and educates them in social issues they were not aware of; and, It also inspires them to make a social change. His is why I would love to take my students on a trip to see Kinky Boots the Broadway Musical before it closes in January. Kinky Boots is a telling tale of a misguided shoemaker and a misunderstood female impersonator who cross paths in order to meet one common goal. Through a heart grabbing story told through doing and dance students will be able to walk away with a new perspective on commonly held stereotypes on a specific group of individuals and hopefully walk away courageous enough to educate others in these detrimental stereotypes that are perpetuated day in and day out.
