I teach in a Title I School through Teach for America in a rural setting in Hawai'i. My students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and interests. They reached my classroom from generations of coffee farmers and fisherman of Hawai'i island, from immigrants of other states and of Mexico, and from islands and Asian countries across the Pacific. My students form a unique culture defined by our island's dedication to aloha (love, sharing life), ohana (family), and kuleana (responsibility/privilege). They are a pleasure to work with each day, and I want to do everything possible to help them achieve an excellent education so that they can take our island's incredible spirit with them in any future career they choose to pursue.
