My students will benefit from anatomic pig dissections because it will teach them about anatomy and physiology not just of animals, but also for humans! They will learn more from this hands on experience than they ever could from paper and pencil! The students will be able to identify the muscles and important body systems of the pigs and compare them to that of humans and other organisms! Dissections are one of the best ways to bring anatomy and physiology from the real world into the classroom! They get to see livers, hearts, brains, eyes, muscles, and bones first hand without having to look at boring pages in a textbook! Performing dissections also allows for students who hope to one day become medical doctors get a first hand look at internal organs and organ systems and how they interact with each other on a three-dimensional practical basis. They will use the dissection tools to investigate and observe organs and organ systems. They will take the pigs that they dissect and learn detailed anatomy and physiology of organisms that can be applied to humans including how the kidney connects to the bladder and how the circulatory system brings oxygen to the entire body! I truly believe this experience will not just prepare those students for their college careers, but also empower them to apply and share their knowledge with everyone they meet!
