My goal with this project is to acquire a virtual reality headset to be able to take students on an interactive experience into the past. The software that can be used with virtual reality headsets is vast and powerful. By successfully funding this project, I will have the chance to spark curiosity and inspire passion into the Social Studies classroom to students in new and exciting ways. While this project came to mind due to the challenges of teaching through the coronavirus pandemic, it is also an investment for my future students. Virtual reality is a step into the future for our students to explore what would otherwise be lost to the pages of a textbook. Beyond geography, virtual reality can be used to show in 3D what might otherwise only be seen in an image or video. For example, through a VR headset, students would be able to view what various global conflicts and wars looked like from the battlefield. Video footage can only capture so much of a historical event - it can be much more powerful to explore the past through a much more immersive lens. In this challenging school year, this technology can be used by me as a teacher in order to broadcast to students what I am seeing through the VR headset, but can also be used by students in the future to see and explore virtual reality themselves using the headset. Funding this project would give me time to explore the technology myself in order to optimize it for my classroom to create meaningful, interactive lessons.
