  • Aspiring Engineers and Coders of the Future

    Funded Oct 27, 2024

My students and I are delighted to share the impact your generous support has had on our elementary school's technology classroom through the introduction of Micro:bit devices. These compact, programmable mini-computer have promoted enthusiasm and learning among our upper grade students, helping them see how coding works in a real setting and not just moving characters on a screen.

A highlight so far has been the development of a digital "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game using the Micro:bits. This project has enabled students to understand coding concepts like variables and randomization. By programming the Micro:bit to randomly select between rock, paper, or scissors upon being shaken, students grasp the concept of variables and the use of random functions in coding. Students also learned to use conditional statements to dictate the Micro:bit's display based on the random selection, reinforcing their understanding of "if-then-else" statements. They also developed an understanding of sensors for input. Using the Micro:bit's accelerometer, students programmed the device to respond to physical gestures.

Besides the coding, the use of Micro:bits also promoted an increased engagement, empowerment through creation, and inclusivity for all students. This hands-on project not only made learning to code enjoyable but also enhances problem-solving skills and logical thinking.

Your support has been instrumental in providing these enriching experiences. The Micro:bits have demystified coding for our young learners. Thank you for your generous donation and for helping me advancing technology education and making a lasting difference in the lives of our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Smith

  • Aspiring Coders of the Future 2020-21

    Funded Sep 14, 2020

Thank you again for donating towards my project for Codesters. My students have really enjoyed learning how to code in Python. Many of them have had experience with block code but this is their first exposure to an actual coding language.

We began using Codesters shortly after the school year began. It has help a lot for those times when either I had to work remotely or the school building was closed. The resources that are available for teachers make easy and the self paced, guided learning of the lessons allowed the students to work on days when I wasn't available. I can monitor my students progress and they can display their projects for the other students to see. There is enough content on the site that I feel confident if we were to go remote for the remainder of the year, I would have enough to teach without concern about my students falling behind.

My students are learning skills that, besides being important in coding, are also needed in everyday like. Skills like perseverance, creativity, and problem solving. The student and myself are really looking forward to getting to the next step, creating games with Python. We thank you for your generosity and will continue using this resources to for the remainder of the school year.”

  • Voracious STEM Leaders Seek Ozobot Evo Robots

    Funded Jan 29, 2020

Thank you for your generous donations. My student will be thrilled to be able to code the Ozobots. They have been coding with me for several months on the computer. Now they will be able to see how core can be applied to actual robots. I know they will be grateful for this opportunity.”

  • Aspiring Coders of the Future 2019-20

    Funded Oct 1, 2019

My students and I would like to thank you for your generous donation toward our coding project. My students are learn a lot about the coding language Python. They have begun going through the lessons and creating projects in Codester. They are motivated, thoughtful, and challenged while doing their work and have a sense of pride when it is completed. They come to class excited, asking if we are doing coding today. I am very proud of them and the work they are doing and it could not have happened without your help.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Smith

  • Student Work and Family Engagement in Living Color

    Funded Sep 21, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations. Having a color printer has transformed the computer lab and the students work dramatically. I am now able to display they students work for the whole school to see what an amazing job they are doing on the computers. The classroom teachers are asking for the work to be printed for the students portfolios. My students are also able to bring their hard work home with them for their parents to enjoy and cherish for years to come. It was your contribution that made this possible and we are extremely grateful.”

  • Aspiring Coders of the Future

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

I would like to thank you for your generous donation. My students are very exited to be learning a new language; one that will benefit them in their future. The understand that any job that they choose to seek in the future will involve some form of technology whether its building robots or programming them. By getting a start early it will only make it easier for them through the rest of their schooling.

The students are currently learning the basics of coding in Python through Codester. What's great about this program is there it starts with key terms, moves into activities where students learn different pieces of code, and then finally create a program using that code. They are able to self assess and I am able to follow their progress.

Before posting for Codester on Donors Choose, the students got to try out a demo of the program and were excited to learn that they would be able to continue to build on what they learn from it with the Intro to Codester. What I think really got them excited with the Create Your Own Game part. We are currently working through the Intro so that by the end of the year they will be able to use this knowledge and take their coding to the next level.

Again, I'd like to thank you for your contribution to the students Computer Science education. They would not have this opportunity without your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Smith

As the technology teacher at the only official STEM school in New York, working with Kindergarten through 5th grade, it is my responsibility to instill my students with the computer science skills they will need to be successful in the future. I have been doing this through the use of outdated applications and coding. Now I am ready to take it to the next level. To do this, our school is in desperate need of an upgrade. We need memory to upgrade our older, but functioning computers so they can support current software and run smoothly with the newer operating systems. I am working on implementing a robotics program into the school for the coming years and will not be able to support with our current situation. I am asking for donations for memory to improve our current computers as well as surge protectors to make the computer lab a safer working environment. Please help bring our school stay up to date!
