My students are more comfortable staring at a screen, often texting, rather than talking to the person sitting next to them. The 8 Mathematical practices seem to be written with board games in mind, but my two favorite are "Make sense of problems, and persevere in solving them" and "Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others." Board Games give students a chance to hone these skills face to face with their peers. Students often see math as a place where they have failed, often, and by introducing the mathematical practices through the use of board games I know I can spark an interest in Math. Getting my students to put down the video game controllers has become my crusade!
