My 6th and 7th grade students come from challenged urban neighborhoods in northern Brooklyn such as East Williamsburg and Bushwick. Most students' family situations qualify them for Title I funding and free school lunches. My students love puzzles and games; our school has award-winning programs in chess as well as baseball. They are great kids who learn best when they get a chance to be creative. But young people don't read enough. This will be a fun and hopefully painless way to both increase their literary and math skills.
