Thrills & Chills & Mysteries... OH MY!
Funded Jan 29, 2022Annnnnnd just like that, mysteries and thrillers are the favorite genres of pretty much all of my students. On a daily basis, I hear students talking about the amazing book that they were reading last night, and how they couldn't believe what happened and were totally shocked by other events. These books are keeping my classes on the edge of their seats and are all that my students can talk about.
I am so grateful that through this proposal, I was able to add many book baskets of what my classes so desperately wanted - mysteries and thrillers. Students have a book "hit list" a mile long of titles that they want to get their hands on. Independent reading is now looked forward to so much that my classes are sometimes upset and disappointed when they don't have all day to read one of their new books. As a teacher, this is a welcomed problem.”

Funded Jan 28, 2022Having these books added to my classroom library has had a huge impact on all of my struggling and emerging students. This year more than ever, it is a challenge to teach students from such a wide range of school readiness, with many kids having fallen behind from what they did during remote learning last year. Getting books, and getting interesting books, for students who are working hard to get back up onto grade level has been a real issue, but that problem has been solved in my class thanks to the amazing donors who fulfilled this proposal.
Now that I have a plethora of high-interest reading material that is "just right" for my emerging readers, their reading volume and enjoyment have skyrocketed. Students who dreaded independent reading assignments now look forward to them! These books were exactly what they needed to propel them to finish out this school year strong. Both my students and I are grateful to have these books in my classroom library.”

Funded Jan 28, 2022Thank you so much for bringing these books into my classroom. These books fulfilled a need that my students had in my classroom library. My students are now clamoring to get their hands on one of the many newly created mystery book baskets. It's challenging for them not to reveal spoilers to their friends about the exciting conclusions and all the twists and turns that each book holds, but they're doing their best.
I am so appreciative of everyone who funded this project. More than ever, quality books are difficult to come by this year. This project has made an immediate and meaningful impact on my students, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”

Funded Jan 1, 2022Thank you so much for contributing to this project.
This year more than ever, there is a large gap between the reading levels and capabilities of many of my students. It has been difficult for students to find books that are both on their level and enjoyable to read. Now that I have these new books in my classroom library, that problem is solved.
Because there were many "series books" that were a part of this proposal, now when a student finishes a book, they already have the next book in the series waiting for them. They can move into the next book already filled with confidence about their ability to comprehend and enjoy the book. To read multiple books in a series and to complete a series provides an amzing sense of joy and accomplishment to my students.
Once again, these books have made an immediate impact on my students and classes.”

Mr. Rosenzweig
High-Interest Books to Help Struggling Readers
Funded Dec 15, 2021I cannot thank you enough for bringing these books into my classroom library. They have made such a positive impact on all of my students, but as I hoped, they have really improved the independent reading experience for many of my struggling and developing readers.
Students who, up until now, have had a difficult time finding a book that was both on their level and interesting to them now have multiple baskets of brand new books that meet all of their requirements! Since these books debuted in my library, my struggling readers have picked up the pace all around - they've been reading more pages, the ability to discuss their books has skyrocketed, and they've been completing assignments related to their books better than they ever have.
Thank you once again for having such a positive and meaningful influence on my class and students.”

Mr. Rosenzweig

Funded Apr 21, 2021Thank you so much for funding this proposal. I have shared the news with my classes and was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm and excitement. They can't wait for May and June - the months that I told them we'd take frequent trips outside of the building to create our sidewalk art messages and mosaics. As you can see from the pictures I uploaded, many students already have ideas for the shape and design of the art they'll create. (They're pretty excited.)
I never thought, as a Literacy teacher, that I'd have to answer so many questions on the topic of "painter's tape and sidewalk chalk" in my life. That Q&A is generally followed up with some May/June weather forecast questions and requests to decorate more than one sidewalk square. (Did I mention they're excited?)
As soon as the supplies arrive, I'll construct a schedule so each of my 6 classes will have at least 2 days of outdoor time to create these sure-to-be fantastic chalk mosaics. I informed my classes that we'll keep creating art and using the supplies until we run out of school days or sidewalk chalk, so now they've taken it upon themselves to create multiple designs. (Yes, they're that excited.)
My principal and other teachers in the building were thrilled to learn that the building's surroundings are soon to be beautifully and brightly decorated by some of our students. And as always, none of this would be possible if not for your amazing generosity, kindness, and thoughfulness.”

Funded Feb 26, 2021Thank you soooooo much for funding this proposal, which allowed me to provide every one of my students with their very own copy of "The Outsiders" to use in class and keep forever and ever!
We are reading "The Outsiders" as a class novel, which means that we all read the same page at the same time, when we are in school. One of the many benefits of reading a book this way is that it allows the students to immediately and constantly be able to interact with their friends/classmates and teachers about what they just read. The "turn and talk" breaks look a little bit different with the adaptation of social distancing, but the students really shine when they get to discuss what they just read and make some predictions about what may happen next.
So far we have read the first three chapters and the kids are extremely interested in the story and characters... especially Dallas Winston! Even though this book was written in the late 1960s, my classes are doing an amazing job relating to some of the situations presented in the novel, and comparing them to current, real-world issues.
Once again, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity. You have made a HUGE and everlasting impact on my students, and for that, I am extremely grateful and appreciative.”

Funded Oct 13, 2020Thank you so much for bringing this projection to my students! The fact that students have these brand new books to look forward to reading when they come into the building is a great treat. With libraries being closed or restricted, these books are a tremendous escape and prize for all of them.
Reading looks a little differently, but they enjoy every minute of it. They may be wearing gloves and are spread further out than they ever have been inside the classroom, but none of that takes away from their joy of being able to read these amazing titles.
Many of the books from this project are about issues and topics that are happening in the world and in their lives RIGHT NOW, so they could not have arrived at a better time.
Thank you so much for these amazing resources for my students.”

Funded Apr 11, 2020I cannot thank each and every one of you enough for helping to fulfill this proposal. These books, I feel more than ever, are desperately needed for students to learn from, connect with, and relate to.
Currently, my school is still receiving information from the district and the mayor's office in regards to if we're even permitted to have a classroom library this year (because of COVID-19). Unfortunately, these amazing books haven't made it into any students' hands as of yet, but don't worry, that'll change soon.
If the year continues with teachers and students not being able to share books, I've already secured a scanner and have already begun scanning these amazing titles, page by page, so my students can read them virtually. I figured, "I can't go outside anyway, so I might as well scan some books!" It won't be the same as having one of these beautiful, brand new books in their hands, but my students are already beyond thrilled at the notion of virtually being able to read some books that have been on their "wish list" for a while, especially students who want to learn more about what it means to be LGBTQ+.
Once again, thank you for your incredible and generous support. Three classes full of students wouldn't be as happy as they are right now if it wasn't for you.”

Mr. Rosenzweig
