  • Modeling for Mastery

    Funded Dec 1, 2022

Thank you so much for funding my Modeling for Mastery project. I know that my students will be grateful when they learn of all our donor’s generosity. You all are the best of the best and I owe you a debt of gratitude. My students will be using these tools and supplies to research concepts and then create their own models of the living systems that we learn about here in our Living Environment Regents and Anatomy and Physiology classes. Building these models are the key to learning about all the complex systems that we encounter in both courses. These students often go without, but in our classroom the power to create models will be in their hands. I can't wait to share your generosity with them. I can picture the excitement on their faces. It makes me smile. Thank you again so very much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rappaport

  • Give the Most to Students who Have the Least

    Funded Dec 14, 2021

Thanks to your generous contributions my students have had the opportunity to express themselves in color when completing diagrams for photosynthesis using the expo markers whether on the big board at the front of the room or on their personal dry erase boards that they use periodically.

Also, the children appreciate when they have enough pencils, pens and paper for their use during classwork exercises. Many of my students come from single-parent homes in under served communities where schools supplies are often a luxury.

With your help, later this school year, my students will be making models of numerous scientific phenomena. I expect to be leading the students in projects involving the intricacies of cells and complexities of genetics.

Thanks again for your donations, your caring has touched all of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rappaport

  • The Eyes Have It Too!

    Funded Jan 21, 2015

When the students first saw the new goggles they were going to use, they were excited by all the colors. But, shortly thereafter they had a greater appreciation for the new appliance that was hanging on the wall. That is, they remembered when we used to have to bring in the goggles from another classroom. They also remember that the goggles came in a bin filled to capacity with goggles just thrown in there. Not only did the goggle appear in disarray but they were also pretty dirty and no one wanted to touch them nonetheless put them on their face to protect their eyes!

Now, when students open the doors to their new Ultraviolet Sterilization Cabinet, they can be assured of clean, microbe-free goggles to use for the protection of their eyes. No one wants to get a bacterial infection from a pair of goggles that are intended to protect you.

The great thing about this project is that I get to teach the students about some pretty important concepts in biology that they need to know for their own health, as well as, for their understanding of the world around them. For example, students know that they use goggles to physically protect their eyes from debris, chemicals, etc. But, they weren't aware that they could contract an illness if the goggles weren't cleaned and sterilized before they use them. Also, this project has helped to illustrate and explain how their immune systems work, the first line of defense against microbes, and that ultraviolet light can be used to kill bacteria that might otherwise cause them harm from using a piece of equipment that is tainted by potentially harmful bacteria. All these benefits and more resulted from your most generous donation.”

  • The Eyes Have It!

    Funded Dec 4, 2014

I can't really describe to you the effect that your generous gesture had on my students. It was like a scene of a Christmas morning when a child comes to see something really cool that awaits them underneath the tree. Perhaps my description is somewhat exaggerated but it was truly wonderful to see my students' eyes when I first opened the cabinet to reveal the brand new safety goggles that we had just gotten with your help.

Now it was time to do a lab and their eyes needed to be protected. Student eye protection is required when we use glassware and reagents. You should have seen their eyes! All the different fun colors seemed to jump right out at them. "They're new! They're clean!" I heard several students say out loud. Then I heard a chorus of shouts, "I want a pink one! I want blue! Look at those orange ones... Cool!" the students exclaimed. They could hardly wait to claim the safety goggles in their favorite color.

Perhaps their favorite color makes them more likely to appreciate and wear their new safety goggles. I guess that says it all. If the color of the goggles enhances their positive feelings about wearing the goggles, then all the effort and money donated was worth it. I can't remember the last time I had difficulty collecting the goggles from my students after a lab session was over. They wanted to wear them longer than was necessary! Usually, students can't wait to take their goggles off... that wasn't a problem that day and I doubt that it'll be a problem in the future. Thank you all so much for giving from your heart.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rappaport
