Creating Cool Copper Jewelry
Funded Aug 28, 2023Since receiving the copper from your generous donations we have been busy learning to design and make several pieces of jewelry. Pierced and riveted pendants, wire wrapped rings, bead wrapping and chain making. I love to see the pride and confidence they gain knowing they made the jewelry themselves. They are so pleased with themselves.
With your donation all of my students have been able to learn basic skills in working with metal. They were able to learn how to saw, file, sand, buff and clean copper. They also learned how to cold connect metal through wire wrapping and rivets and hot connection through soldering.
Now that they have been able to practice these skills they are anxious to start designing more complicated pieces. Some students are already asking about an advanced class.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The SONIC Foundation and 14 other donors.Technology for Art Students
Funded Jan 19, 2022We are so excited the iPads and apple pens have arrived. We immediately opened them and had the IT guy set them up. I have joined with another teacher (graphic design/art foundations) to set up a charging and check out system. Our students have already started using them.
The students have already started to use them. They are so excited to use the pens and draw and design right on the screen.
Because of an Apple TV and projector in the room, the older and more experienced students can show the younger and new students the things they are learning. They can share their work directly from their iPads.
Because of your donations our students have more opportunities to make great art.”

Device Management in the Classroom
Funded Oct 24, 2018Thank you so much for the donations we received at Jordan High school. I have only just begun to teach my students the best use of their devices in the classroom. I was just able to get the device management system set up in my classrooms. The students have been using them by choice and it seems to help get their devices put away and working on their projects. I am going to find ways to reward students for keeping them put away.
The IPad has also been a great help in all of my classrooms to help students that don't have devices to turn their work in. We were also able to secure some other funds and purchase an Apple TV for my rooms and I have been able to cast from the IPad to the projector making for better instruction and I am able to show my students right from the screen how to use it.
I have also found some great apps to help students to research and gather resources for their projects.
I have been working on helping students understand that the devices are not a bad thing, but have tried to focus on how there is an appropriate and inappropriate way to use them during class. I have some students that have missed class and I have been able to use the IPad to film some of my instruction and then I have posted those videos online. Students can then go online and watch those videos. Some of the students have asked to use the IPad to watch those videos.
Thank you for making this all possible.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Chevron Fuel Your School.Technology in the Art Room: 3D printing and Welding Sculpture
Funded Oct 12, 2017My students were so excited to learn that our project was funded. It took us a while to get our materials and get it set up to do the project. We chose to sculpt insects for the 3D pen sculptures and household objects for the wire and metal for the solder iron sculpture projects. I let the students play around with the pens for a while to get used to using them and learn what kind of challenges we would have in sculpting with plastic filament and what kind of tricks we could do to get the sculptures to stand by themselves. It took time to learn how to use the new technology. The students were able to make some very unique bug sculptures from their sketches and turn them into 3D sculptures.
The project was very exciting for the students. I heard some of them bragging to their friends about what they were doing and told them that they should also take sculpture so that they could do this project. I think the most exciting part about this product is that it was very different than what other students are doing and very different than the traditional sculpting methods that most of them could do on their own at home. It was great to see the students using a new material and because I was also new to this product we were forced to brainstorm and find new ways to sculpt that we were not used to. We did run into some issues of the pens getting clogged and the solder not getting hot enough to attach but we had to go through a few trial and error until we could get it to work.
The project was very successful in that I had some students that I struggled most of the semester to do anything that were very excited to do this and completed the project fairly quickly because they enjoyed it so much. I am excited to continue to use the materials that we have received through Donors Choose and Chevron's "Fuel Your school" programs. I am looking forward to having future students use this new medium and see the new and interesting ways that they will use it to experiment and create new things. Thank you for supporting the learning in our school.”

Close-Up: Photography Students Want To Get Closer
Funded Oct 10, 2016We are so grateful for the Macro Camera lens that you purchased for us. Every time that it has snowed my classes have begged me to let them go out with the lens to help them get closer to the snowflakes. We have been able to get some photographs of not only snowflakes but also water drops in the rain, texture on fruit and leaves and many other things. They are very excited to see the difference on what they were able to take pictures of and how much closer this lens lets them get to the subject matter.
As you can see in the pictures, students are using their cell phones and the camera with the new lens. They are comparing the photographs they get with both kinds of lenses. This has allowed them to see the world in a whole new way. This is teaching them that there are different ways to take pictures. They are learning macro photography and how to see the beauty in small and simple things.
One of the projects that they have especially enjoyed with the new camera lens is taking pictures of plain objects. They are using the skills of good lighting and different kinds of lenses to beautify ugly objects and glorify plain and unusual objects. I was really pleased with the photos that the students turned in. I am excited to have them use the lens more in the spring when plants are starting to grow and when the bugs come out. It will be fun to see what the students will do with more subjects in the different seasons.
I am so grateful to see their excitement looking at things they don't normally get to see and taking unique photographs. It has helped motivate many of the students that are not always easy to motivate. I feel that as the students are able to use professional equipment it helps them to get that much closer to feeling like they can make a career out of photography. I am excited to see students wanting to make choices that will give them skills that they can use in many different career choices whether it be a career in photography or using photography in the careers that they choose.
Again, we thank you for the support you are providing our students.”

Cameras in Control
Funded Oct 9, 2015We so appreciate the camera lenses and equipment that we received. It has been helpful in many ways. My students have been very excited to play with and use the equipment on their cell phones. This has been especially helpful to the students that cannot afford to purchase their own DSLR. It has also helped teach my students how they can with a little help take what they already have and do the job they have been asked to do. My students have been creative in the use of the lenses, apps, tripods and shutter release buttons to take some great photos. They are really enjoying trying out the different kinds of lenses that most of the students did not even realize they had available to them.
As you can see in the pictures, students are using the cell phone accessories for different kinds of projects. Students are able to share check out the equipment and take them home to play and be unique in their photos. The students are getting the opportunity to use technology in many different ways. Using their phone cameras is teaching them to not only take pictures but to also manage their photography through online clouds and photo editing apps as well. We have worked hard to help them see the difference between the snapshot, selfie and photo bombing and capture more fine art and commercial photos.
One of the projects that they have especially enjoyed with their cell phone cameras is taking pictures of portraits in unique ways. (outside of the selfie) They really got into this assignment to play with angles, lighting and frozen motion.
I am also grateful for the way that it has allowed my students and I to be more flexible in taking pictures. I am also pleased to see how many more of my students are able to be successful in their assignments because they are able to use what we have and not have to go and purchase a camera that they cannot afford. Now that my students are excited about what they have been able to achieve, they will continue to work on their photography and many will go onto making successful careers out of it. I also look forward to seeing my students able to use these technology skills to enhance their 21 century and on the job skills in design and use cell phones and their apps and accessories that they will be able to use in a variety of employment opportunities.
Again, we thank you for the support you are providing our students.”

Practical Students With Portable Practices And Projects
Funded Dec 19, 2014We so appreciate the computer that we received. It has been a huge blessing to us and has helped in so many ways. I use it all of the time to help in my instruction and several of my Commercial art and advertising students have been able to use it for a variety of projects. They have mentioned on a number of occasion how they are thankful that they have a computer that they can use outside of the classroom. It is a great comfort that we can take the computer to different classrooms within the building. It is also nice to have the convenience of taking the computer with us outside or off site for photo shoots.
As you can see in the pictures, students are using the computer for different kinds of projects. Students are able to share presentations they have created. They can take it with them to different parts of the building to work on their projects. With the use of Google drive and the computer lab at the school students have been able to use the cloud and then open it up on the laptop when they have to leave the room to go to another classroom for presentation, work outside or when they go on photo shoots. You can see it is a great tool for us to not only print materials from but the students were able to distort an image on the computer, and then take the computer to the site and use it as a reference for their sticky note mural on the walls of the school. They have also been able to collaborate and work together on projects in different parts of the building.
I am also grateful for the way that it has allowed my students and I to be more mobile throughout the school. It kept us from being limited to one location in the school. I am also pleased to see my students being able to use the computer to enhance their 21 century and on the job skills in design and use software that they will be able to use in a variety of employment opportunities.
Again, we thank you for the support you are providing our students.”

Making 21st Century Artists
Funded Oct 15, 2013My students and I are so grateful to have gotten the posters, books and camera for our classroom.
The posters have helped my students to visualize the topics that we talk about in our Advertising and Commercial Art classes as well as the Photography and Ceramics classes. My students go to the posters on the wall and use them as a reference in doing their projects.
We were really sad that the digital tablet was discontinued before we could get it. Because of this there was a little miscommunication and with some back and forth emails we were able to purchase a camera, and memory cards. We received them just in time for students to use to photograph their projects and for some students to use that could not afford their own camera.
With these resources and supplies students were able to create portfolios of work that they were able to create great works of art and presentations.
The books gave my students and I ideas to implement in projects and we have seen some great improvement in their work.
The students and I at Jordan High School truly appreciate the gift that you have given us. Thank you for all that you do to help education.”
