DSLR Photography - More Cameras for COVID-19 Safety
Funded Aug 12, 2020At Frontier we would really like to thank you for helping the photography program thrive during this difficult time. Because of your contribution, students we able to experience hands on experiences and reduce sharing/contact, ensuring proper social distancing.
The students were thrilled to learn how to take pictures with something other than their phones, paying close attention to light settings, trying out focus techniques which allowed their creativity to soar. Thank you for your kind generosity!”

Funded Oct 18, 2019These days kids take out their phones and snap a picture. For many it ends there. For some, this is the beginning of a passion for photography. Smartphone cameras have a limited viewing angle because of the fixed focal length. This feature restricts the quality of photography. On the other hand, a DSLR camera lens has a versatile viewing angle. Mobile cameras are pretty handy for selfies, documents and social media. DLSR cameras offer so much more but it costs more than a student or typical school budget can afford. It comes with lots of choices for lenses which will have a wonderful impact on how a photo is taken. Because of its long focal length and narrow field of view, a telephoto lens makes near and distant objects seem closer together and more similar in size than they appear in real life. This effect is known as "foreshortening" or "perspective compression". A telephoto lens makes distant objects appear much larger.
While capturing life at our school, a cellphone camera can be very limiting for taking photos, especially in the case of stage performances or sports activity. A standard lens that a camera comes with a stock entry-level DSLR camera is still limiting when taking pictures from the rear of the auditorium or on the sidelines of a sporting event. While we have the standard kit lenses that come with our Canon Rebel, these just do not perform to the level needed for these events.
Thanks to our donors through DonorsChoose, we were able to upgrade our photography with the Sigma 150-600mm zoom lens for our existing DSLR camera. Our students can now take photos of our sports teams and stage performers with a much better perspective. Many students have made good use of this lens. One, in particular, has taken the role of school archivist/social media manager. She has embraced this new tool for capturing great moments at our school. She is so grateful for the opportunity to learn how to use this advanced technology and may someday grow this knowledge into a professional career. We are grateful for the DonorsChoose community for giving them this opportunity. Thank you to you for helping gain skills through experience with this advanced tool.”
