  • Provide Music for A Growing Choir Program

    First and foremost, my sincerest thanks for your generosity. It does not go unnoticed when those who have the means to donate choose to do so. Please be assured that your decision has affected my students and I positively as we prepare for our spring concert.

    This is my first year in this position as middle school chorus director at Meade Middle School. the position came with many growing pains, one of which is that this school has not had a stable chorus program for the past few years. With the lack of a stable program comes the lack of culture of musical appreciation. I have put much effort forth to show my students that there is more to music than what they hear on the radio and to convince them that other genres are worth singing and appreciating.

    One of the songs you assisted us in purchasing, Solfege Symphony, uses a combination of classical tunes that students are familiar with (such as Ode to Joy and Beethoven's 9th Symphony) and solfege syllables to assist in aural training. The students have actually been quite engaged while learning this song because they recognize some of the tunes already! Even some of the students whom I had the most difficulty with in terms of class participation have learned this song and are preparing to sing it in our concert! There is a small solo speaking part in the song that I thought I might have to leave out because many of the students said it was "corny", but in another class, I had students wanting to audition to do that part! I love seeing my kids become passionate about music.

I have inherited a large (and growing) choir of 120 6th grade students, and another choir of 7th and 8th grade students that is about another 100 students. The choral library I inherited, however, does not provide me with the materials I need to accurately challenge my students and help them grow as singers. I want to be able to provide all my students with modern materials so that they are getting the most out of their music education! I have chosen two popular choral songs; one for my 6th grade choir, and one for my 7th and 8th grade combined choir. The song I chose for my 6th graders is a song that we can use for performance, but also helps to develop sight reading skills. Sight reading skills are an important facet of any successful choir program, and I would love to be able to get my 6th grade students to reach their full potential through use of this song. The second piece will help me to develop other necessary skills in my upperclassmen choirs. Finally, the choir builder books by Rollo Dilworth are widely accepted as an effective method of developing basic vocal technique in beginning or young singers. My students deserve to have the same quality of resources provided to them that wealthy schools are able to purchase on their own. This is why I am asking for the help in purchasing these songs and choir builder books.
