My students need over 30 books-- not just printed pages, but stories they will fall in love with, including Slam! SOLD, Dark Sons and I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World. The only way to become a better runner is to run, and the only way to become a better reader is to read. Our class is already reading focused; however, my classroom library is too small for my students to borrow books. This project will let my students borrow books of their own choosing, bringing their habits of reading and own interests into their homes. The books in our school library have an average publishing date of 1973. Needless to say, my students are not drawn to the yellowed, worn books. I was fortunate enough to have a robust library in every school I attended. I could get lost in the aisles of stories. I want that same opportunity for my students. The diverse and interesting stories will allow my students to see glimpses of themselves in the stories surrounding our classroom. The new book smell and crisp pages will show my students how invested we are in their education. This project is about more than just increasing reading levels, though that is vitally important. This project is about building lifelong, ravenous readers.
