  • Food For Thought

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

The resources your donations provided significantly enhanced our English classroom experience. One exciting project we initiated is the "Literary Snack Break." We integrated the snacks and treats provided at the beginning of the school year into our reading sessions. For instance, students selected a book, read a chapter, and then enjoyed snacks. This immersive approach not only made literature more rewarding but also sparked insightful discussions about the texts.

The students were genuinely thrilled and intrigued when they first saw the materials. The sight of a classroom filled with enticing snacks created an immediate buzz of excitement. It not only made the learning environment more enjoyable but also demonstrated to the students that literature can be a multisensory experience. Their initial reactions set a positive tone for the entire school year, fostering a sense of enthusiasm for reading and exploring language.

Presently, our English class is delving into a creative writing project titled "Sensory Storytelling." Students are using the snacks provided to inspire descriptive and vivid narratives. Each student is tasked with crafting a short story that incorporates the flavors, textures, and aromas of the snacks into the narrative. We plan to compile these stories into a class anthology, complete with illustrations and, of course, a section acknowledging the generosity of our donors. The next step involves a reading session where students will share their unique creations, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the creative process.”

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

I am extremely grateful for your help in funding this project! It will not only be a fantastic way to help teach my English 1 students about enduring Gullah Geechee legacies, but it will also bring the material to life! Natalie's visit is going to be a bright spot this fall!”

  • Writing Letters for Change

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

This project allowed students to affect change in their communities by writing to elected officials and local leaders. By taking the initiative to find issues of importance the students were empowered to understand the process used by these leaders to represent their constituents. From issues surrounding land use to voting to gun safety to transportation, these students created a network to help communicate the needs and desires of their communities. They also used these materials to follow up and write thank you notes,”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Martin

From thank you letters to letters to their state representatives, these students are hoping to grab attention while learning the nuances of a properly written letter. My students are hoping to use letters as a way to affect change in their local and statewide community. Whether it be a note to a pen pal or a plea for funding, I would like to see my students engage in regular writing for a variety of purposes. I feel that these materials will empower these young leaders to affect change in their community and beyond. Social media is fine and dandy, but letters make a point!
