Creating Urban Bookworms!
Funded Aug 4, 2016Dear Donors:
Thank you all for your generous donations! I have received the entire set of books that were requested for my classroom and am already seeing the effects of having books in the classroom.
Our school has students participating in Sustained Silent Reading during their advisory periods which takes place 3 times a week. During this time, students choose a book of their liking (some borrow books from other teachers) to read for 15 to 20 minutes in complete silence. Prior to receiving these books, students were limited to a small number of books in my classroom that were falling apart at the bindings. Many didn't have books and would be forced to treat the time as a study hall, which would defeat the purpose of Sustained Silent Reading. Now, ALL my students can take advantage of the Sustained Silent Reading time.
One of the major reasons for student engagement during this time of reading is the fact that the books are new. Some of them have never held a brand new book before. Most books they read have been used beyond their years. I wish you could have seen the faces of my students when they picked up a brand new book! It is a look that I will never forget. Thank you for showing my students that they deserve nice things.
In addition to reading in the classroom, I now can provide them an opportunity to borrow books from my classroom. Students are already asking to borrow these books, which I'm am currently working on a system to implement. I have never seen such eagerness to read in my classroom. It is refreshing to see that students are learning to enjoy reading and at the same time improving their literacy skills.
There are no words to describe the humongous impact you have already made on my students. Thank you so much for providing these resources to my students!”

Bounce With Me!
Funded Jul 17, 2014Thank you all so much for your support. We were able to fully fund our project in the summer and received our basketballs in early September. Needless to say, the students were very excited to have our very own set of basketballs to use. Several of our returning players voiced their gratitude for the basketballs and remarked on how we needn't borrow the old used basketballs anymore. They also wanted to know how we got the materials and I promptly explained to them of your generous contributions to our project.
Since we've received these basketballs we've put them to good use. They are primarily a resource for our middle school basketball team to use during practice. Our players participate in shooting, dribbling, and passing drills where the resources provided are used. We've also used them in our annual middle school basketball tournament that is open to all students. Your donations have already had great influence on our students.
I created this project on DonorsChoose to promote fitness and teamwork at our school. Through your contributions I have been able to accomplish this goal. We promptly received approximately 45 students trying out for our basketball team when knowledge of the resources spread. My assistant coach and I continually see the joy and camaraderie developing each day. A common complaint we hear is how sore they are the next day after a practice. They say this with smiling faces, understanding that soreness is a natural product to getting healthy and staying fit. Some students have shed a couple pounds through the practices we've had. The lifestyles and attitudes of our students towards exercise and sports have significantly changed. Thank you all for your contributions to this project and the support you've shown for our students.”

We See, We Learn, We Do!
Funded Apr 15, 2011Thank you so much for your dedication to the success of our students and their future. I have seen an immediate impact in our classroom's progress in mathematics with our new document camera. The students were excited to use this brand new technology in the classroom and were curious as to how it works. With the document camera I have been able to model many of the processes to solve math problems. Also, I have modeled how notes should be written which is a very important skill for students preparing for college to learn.
Your contribution to our school is very much appreciated by myself, the staff, and most importantly the students. Thank you so much!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Lo
