The students work quickly to write their programs and are eager to watch the drone follow their commands. Then they wait for their turn to connect with one of the drones. Each student watches carefully as the drone flies their code to see if it does what they programmed it to do. There is a cheer of joy if everything goes to plan. But if not, even better things happen. The students brains go immediately to work trying to dissect the code to find what led the drone astray and how to make it work next time. I love seeing their minds turn on! Students begin to apply mathematical concepts of measurements and variables and loops into their coding. As a math teacher, I see some students struggle with these concepts in the classroom, but they jump right into them with the drones. The Tello drone inspires future programmers, budding filmmakers and prospective pilots. Being an after-school activity, we only have limited time to work together each week. This new drone will provide more students the opportunity to test and run their code. There will be less waiting and more doing. The Tello is a pretty powerful little drone. In addition to the coding, the camera in the drone captures photos and video. The addition of the safety cage and the extra batteries will help make this a resource that can be used by many more students for years to come.
