Our classroom library is currently housed on a beat up bookshelf that is likely older than I am, and literally falling apart. I've done my best to repair it and cover the worn, damaged shelves with decorative tape, but I can only do so much. The bins I'm using sort of fit, but my kids are never sure where to find the book they want, or where to put it back when they're done. When more than 2 kids are trying to access the library at the same time, it becomes a crowded, jumbled mess. My kids can't read the books they don't know are there. The simplicity of a new bookshelf and display rack will allow me to highlight the variety of books that are currently hiding in my classroom library, as well as organize them in a manner that make them easily findable and accessible for both me and my kids. It's amazing when a child discovers a book for the first time in April that has been there since August, and it becomes their instant favorite, and likely the favorite of multiple other kids in the class as well. A bookshelf isn't fancy or flashy, but it would make a world of difference in my first grade classroom.
