"Nearly 60 years since the Brown v Board of Education decisions, African American students continue to lack equal access to a high quality education and still lag far behind their white peers in reading and math proficiency, high school rates, and college completion." (White House Initiative on African American Education) This year I am teaching 21 third grade students. 80% of my class receives free or reduced price lunch. However, these students are determined to do well and have success. This year most of my students are not reading on grade level. I believe that I can help my students by having a reading center for students to have a place where they can read independently to help improve their comprehension skills.
