Funded Sep 4, 2020Thank you so much for funding our project. As you know we received your generous donation of books, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It is a story of restorative justice, which is more important than ever given the times we live in. Moreover, it has a message of inspirational hope.
Because of the pandemic, it was a challenge in delivering the material. Through our perseverance, dedication, and devotion to our students, we were able to get the novel into their hands. We hand-delivered each copy, with safety in the forefront. It was well worth the effort.
We coincided the read with Black History Month. The students are still discovering the book, examining the many layers of the story. The contemporary read is very relatable, making it engaging to our kids. The students understand current events and how it shares similarities with the novel. More importantly, the class better understands how to see things from other perspectives.
We've been so inspired by the project, we are adding to it. The students are creating a podcast that will interview a civil rights figure and author, Sharon Langley. We've already conducted the interview and are now editing and mixing the podcast. We've been moved to create our own content to positively impact others.
Thank you once again for your generosity. Please know your contribution has made a difference and lasting impact upon our young adults.”
With gratitude,
Mr. James
