Play Like the Varsity!
Funded Jan 29, 2019My Junior Varsity team will now be able to develop their skills because of the equipment we were able to purchase through your donations. The practice soccer balls are of a much better quality than the used ones that were 10 years old. Having three "game" balls ensures that the skills performed during a contest are of the truest form. The canopy will be used at practices and games. Even though our season is winter Southern California can have temperatures in the 80's during the days of November/December and rain and cold weather in January/February. Because the games are played on turf fields inclement weather will not stop a practice or games, only lightening.
The excitement from the players when the equipment arrived was contagious. I had inflated the soccer balls prior to showing the team the equipment. Many players wanted to set up the canopy. Setting up the canopy was a process as they had to work together with some players taking a leadership role and others willing to hold this part or that part. The gear (balls, Pugg goals and canopy) was assembled and we started practice with 1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2 to the small goals (Pugg). These mini games had the players work on offensive and defensive strategies. They used improvisation and creating space on offense AND pressure/cover on defense. The games were played in a small confined space resulting in close control to maintain possession.
The players were surprised when I told them practice was over as they were engaged for a full hour (after the canopy set up). Junior Varsity players need time to develop and this new quality equipment will enable them to perform at their best. These focused practices will increase their skill development and enable them to "Play Like Varsity".”

Funded Nov 1, 2017Thank you for your generous donation. My ability to promote "Lifelong Fitness and Health" to students is greatly increased.
I unveiled the equipment slowly and dramatically starting with the known and progressing to the unknown. First was the equipment students were familiar with such as: jump ropes (I received "speed" ropes) and coated dumbbell weights (3 lb and 5 lb). Next was the equipment some students have seen used: agility ladders and aerobic step ups. Then I presented the unknown: smash balls and abdominal rollers. All of the equipment was met with enthusiasm though the "smash balls" were the most intriguing. The students were excited to "try" to make the balls bounce and no one was able to do so.
Traditional workouts of crunches and push ups do not appeal to the non-athletic student. I wanted equipment that would encourage them to be active and at the same time help them to become healthier. Cardiovascular Fitness is improved through the use of the step ups and jump ropes, Core Muscular Endurance through the use of the abdominal rollers and Core Muscular Strength from the smash balls. Improving balance and coordination with walking lunges (using the dumbbells).
Students are arranged into randomly selected groups through an app enabling them to meet all of their classmates as the year progresses. These workout sessions allow students to socialize while exercising to improve their health. I also incorporate music for a livelier experience.
The California State Standards for 7th grade encourages students to "test their limits". This can be provided by a safe and controlled Physical Education environment. I believe that with our new equipment along with supplemental equipment my students will be encouraged to risk trying something new and challenging and reap the immediate rewards and a healthier life in the future.”
