Research, Financial Literacy & Computer Science...Oh My!
Funded Aug 13, 2019Let me start by again saying thank you for your donation. You cannot even imagine what an impact this computer will have on my classroom, not only this year but for many years to come. At school, my students do have access to technology, including computers similar to this device. However, at home is a totally different story. If a student is working on an assignment at school but needs to continue the learning at home, many do not have the tools needed to be able to do that. With this laptop, they will be able to check it our from me and take it home to be able to work from there. Regardless of whether it is a financial literacy assignment or work from another class, the wall of the school will no longer be a barrier.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Hawkins

Funded May 13, 2019Let me start by again saying thank you to the donors who have so generously given to this project. We are a rural public school in the delta with ambitions to see our students go on be part of excellent things in this world, with the hope that they will inspire other students in our rural community to dream big dreams.
Your donation will impact students for years to come. This equipment will enable students to be able to do research careers in the computer science industry. Even though we are rural, there are many opportunities in computer science, robotics, and engineering. I believe that when my students see these amazing opportunities they will realize that they could find an amazing job right here close to home.
Once they see the opportunities close to home, they also get to look into how to manage the money they might make though sound financial money management practices. Money does not grow on trees, but if they can manage the money they earn, there are many lasting benefits. Again, thank you for your investment in my kids.”

Mr. Hawkins

Funded Aug 20, 2018Let me start by saying thank you so much for your contribution that helped to fund this grant. My students love it when a new box from Amazon arrives because that know it will be another amazing tool that we will be able to use for learning.
When the Lego EV3 Mindstorm robot kit arrived, my robotics students put it to work immediately. They had already been researching designs for their robots that they want to use in the First Lego League competition. By the typing of this letter, they have assembled their robot and started using the EV3 Mindstream software to program and code challenges to run on the competition table. I know they are learning, I know they will be successful, and you are a part of that.”

Funded Mar 27, 2018So many students today have no real understanding of money. It is often even difficult for them to understand why they are not able to have all the things that want. So the goal of this project was to gain an understanding of computer coding as a means to lead to a discussion of a job in the computer science industry. Jobs in computer science tend to pay pretty well, so I knew once I got the kids interested in these well-paying jobs, then we could follow up that with research and discussion based on budgeting and other financial concepts.
Boy did it work. My students immediately loved using the robots as a tool to learn to program and code. They began to ask questions about jobs that involved programming and using robots. Then once they knew how much they might make in the "real world" we started talking about budgeting. I think they now have a better understanding of why they can't have everything they want.”

Funded Dec 14, 2017Let me start by again saying thank you for your amazing contribution to the students in my classroom. You can not imagine what an impact these materials will have on the students in my Delta school district for years to come.
As soon as the Amazon box arrived the kiddos in my classroom were so excited to rip it open and see what had arrived. Every DonorsChoose box from Amazon is like Christmas in my classroom. As you can see, these amazing little robots came with Guardians of the Galaxy skins, so the boys were grabbing. We starting exploring with them right away, and the kids were hooked.
Over the course of the next couple months, following state testing, we will begin to get them back out to see exactly what they will do. We will be using them to learn to code and also, as a little twist, we will be using them as part of an art project if all goes well. I am as excited as my students to get started.
Again, than you for your donation.”

As soon as the shipment arrived, we opened the boxes and the kids started playing with the calculators. When we actually started the project they were in invaluable tool. Students stared using them to figure taxes, gross and net pay and expected salaries for a week of work. We are also using them to reconcile bank statements.”
