My students are hard working, energetic and curious. They are 7 and 8 years old. They attend a high poverty school where 80% of the students qualify for and receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch every day. 50% of my students are learning English as a second language. Here is how our Reading Club works: Each day, students select a book to take home to read to a sibling, friend, or relative. The next day, he/she brings the book back and reads it to me. Together, we record the title on a special sheet in our Reading Club binder. Each time a student records and reads 25 books, he/she is presented with a certificate. Although this process can be time consuming, I believe it is very important for beginning readers to get this one on one time each day. For that reason, I make sure our schedule allows time for it each day.
