My first grade students recently did a project with their 4th grade buddies. We went through every single book in our classroom library and took data on the diversity of our library. We found out that we were severely lacking books with characters that were people of color. We also noticed that there were a lot more male main characters than female main characters in our library. Our class came to the conclusion that we just needed more. With these collections and books, it will help bridge the gap in our library and expose the students to a much more diverse selection of texts.
