  • iPad for Evaluation, Multimedia, and Student Engagement

    Funded Oct 25, 2013

Thank you for all of your generous support. I want to take a moment to tell you what kind of impact having an iPad has had in my classroom.

Firstly, the iPad has seen a great deal of use in my second language instruction. Many students enjoy learning French using multimedia resources, such as the French version of brainpop. I've installed that app, as well as several others on the iPad, and used it in my group work.

Secondly, the iPad works well as a reward system for students. Students who have finished their work both enjoy using it for educational reasons, and enjoy the attention that it brings them.

All of the ways that it is used help to boost student motivation; you can really see the kids' eyes light up when they see it. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Goetz

  • Laminator to Keep Materials in Good Condition!

    Funded Oct 28, 2013

I want to thank you for generously donating for a laminating machine in my classroom. This project was different than many of the others I have requested; usually I ask for things that the students can use themselves, as I am a big believer of the importance of such things in my classroom. This time I asked for something that would help me to preserve student materials, so they would last longer.

While the students may not have noticed, it did have immediate impact in my classroom. I coated my word wall words, instantly making them more interactive. I plan to soon cover many of the cards that students can use to play educational games.

    Thank you for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Goetz

  • Let My Class Read Together!

    Funded Oct 15, 2013

It has been a week since we received the "Elmo" and it has been used almost every day. The students "oohh"ed and "aaahhhh"ed as we unpacked it together, and I immediately connected it to the smartboard. The first thing we did was share the Social Studies project that they had just completed, mapping their own communities, using the Elmo. Students were able to see their maps blown up, and to see the detail that their peers were describing.

Students have appreciated the Elmo. Each time they see me turn it on, they turn and face the board, rapt with attention. They clamor to be the person who manipulates objects under the Elmo, projecting their hand and actions above the heads of their classmates. It has made my class eager to participate, and I hope that this eagerness and the ability to project books and details will have a positive impact on their learning.

    Thank you!! Merci mille fois!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Goetz

  • Trays, So Students Aren't Stuck in Their Seats!

    Funded Jan 2, 2013

I want to begin by expressing gratitude: thank you for your generous gifts.

The kids love them; sitting on the hard floor and hard chairs for so much of the day can't be easy. We wouldn't want to sit in a hard office chair all day at work, but these kids are unfortunately stuck doing just that. Not anymore.

They love the cushions. the cushions are used all day, every day in my classroom. If you stop by, you will always see the students sitting on them.

They love the lap desks (we voted and we're calling them "tables a deux pattes"). Each day during writing, each week during clubs, and any other time that writing takes place finds students quietly finding comfortable and quiet nooks and crannies in the classroom using these desks. They now know that writing can be done anywhere, and that it can be enjoyable. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Goetz

  • Listening Centers Students Can Use

    Funded Nov 6, 2012

Thank you so much for helping my students with headphones. When learning a language, one of the most important things that one can do is to hear it as it is spoken. Students use the headphones to listen to audiobooks in French during their center time, and the wireless nature of the headphones ensures that the students are able to spend more time listening and less time untangling cords.

Due to the facts that school budgets are shrinking and these supplies are quite expensive, there is no way that these students would have been able to get these headphones. I just want to express gratitude for your generosity.

    Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Goetz

Our fourth grade class is part of a dual-language (French/English) program in a Title 1 school. Half of the class is native English-speaking, while the other half is native French-speaking. The children eagerly face the challenge of learning to speak in two languages. They are also new to reading and writing in their second language. It is so important to keep them engaged and motivated, thereby creating life long bilingual, biliterate, bicultural students.
