Have you tried to work in unbearable heat, trying to concentrate on a project and losing all focus because it's so hot your brain just isn't performing its best? This is what my students are facing every day. With Hawaii's high temperatures and my classroom's poor ventilation system, many of my student's are struggling to stay engaged, often asking to leave the classroom for water just to stay cool. With an air conditioning unit students will stay cool in the classroom, allowing for higher engagement, lower rates of missing lecture due to trips to the water fountain, and ultimately a happier, more positive environment for student learning. Besides the heat, students are having a rough time engaging in my more elaborate lecture topics due to lack of lecture space in the classroom. Currently students often have to take notes from a powerpoint, however many students ask multiple questions as follow-ups to my lecture topics. As I explain questions, many of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners meaning if I just tell them the answers to these questions, they won't conceptualize them, thus leaving them more confused than they were before asking their clarifying questions. Having a white board to help draw out and visualize answers to questions, students will not only be more inclined to ask questions, they will also improve upon their understanding for various topics, ultimately improving performance rates and conceptual understanding of the topics presented.
