Each of the students has been able to examine the five major themes in our course text. As a result they know can develpea strong semse of the power of voice amnd activism withing the larger scope fo United States history. Without your support these assignemnts would have had to happen in the digital realm. It is a common belife that students do better in the digital format. Let me be the first to tell you that this belief is untrue. At least in my classroom students do much better with the printed word.”

Funded Aug 22, 2018As we wrap up our first semester in Advanced Placement United States History we are profoundly grateful for our generosity. We realize that Advanced Placement is not for the elite but for the prepared and your help to purchase our text books greatly prepared us for the semester. Without your generosity we would have had to use old and torn texts that were literally falling apart.
In turn we have a program at our school called pay-it-forward where we are raising money to buy books for a Pre-AP class in a local middle school. Together we know we can all make education equitable and equal for all, no matter what zip code we live in.”

We are all Immigrants: Field Trip and Tour of Ellis Island
Funded Mar 29, 2016What an amazing experience the students and I had at Ellis Island. The immigrant story is one that we have discussed and read about all year long. However being able to be in the actual place where so many people had the first encounters with The United States was life changing, We were able to take a self-guided tour with your help. During the entire day we were able to navigate the museum and all that it had to offer, in terms of first hand stories of the immigrants.
For example, in one room my students and I read letters about the conditions in the barracks, My students were blown away when they discovered pope spent days, weeks even months in the rooms. One said, "I can't imagine how bad it was in their country." Having this experience altered many of my students' perceptions of what it was like to be an immigrant, You see many of my students' parents are first generation immigrants. They told me that the stories their parents tell them are nothing compared to what we saw at Ellis Island.
When we got back to the classroom we were able to further investigate and share what we had found. Students were in groups and shared stories and wrote letters to their parents about the experience.”

Our First Senior level AP Course
Funded Jun 15, 2014Again I am so amazed by your supportive words and deeds. We thank you for helping us prepare for our second senior level Advanced Placement course. Through your generosity we will now be able to delve into the concepts by which our government operates. Is it not the purpose of education to create participatory citizens? Through this course and these supplies we are that much closer to be a participant in the great American experiment of democracy. I have always dreamed that my students would know how to function in society and feel as if they are a part of the bigger picture. This is one more step towards making this dream a reality.”

Literacy and Common Core Through eReaders
Funded Dec 28, 2013It is with gratitude that I write you this note to inform you about the use of our e-readers in the Advanced Placement classroom this year. This year we were able to read several titles. For example, we shared notes and had an electronic discussion regarding Uncle Tom's Cabin. This type of discussion is only possible because of the e-readers. Each of these students had a unique experience while reading the novel and will further their growth as they mature towards college. These discussions are a part of any college level course and my students are now more than capable.”

Advanced Placement Library
Funded May 28, 2014It is with utmost gratitude that I send you this note. Thank you for helping to build our classroom library. The new titles will enhance our classroom discussions and add to the options students will have while choosing titles for their outside reading. This gift moves us much closer to realizing a fully stocked library of titles for our Advance Placement United States history classroom. Can you imagine what a sight it will be in September when the students arrive to see that the shelves are full?”
