  • Tech for NASA's Next Astronaut Class

    Funded Sep 26, 2019

As an educator, it feels amazing to have the support of the community behind me. Your generosity makes a significant difference in our classroom, allowing me to engage students in STEM activities, and hopefully, get them to dream big and dream of landing on Mars! It is communities like Donors Choose that encourage me to keep going as an educator and dreaming big myself!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. DeBois

  • Engineering Martian Colonies

    Funded Aug 21, 2018

It may seem insignificant, it may seem small -- computer mice? We have chromebooks, each of them have the trackpads. So why computer mice? I challenge you to make a free tinkercad account and attempt to design a three-dimensional object using a trackpad. It's a nightmare! Working in three dimensions is exciting until you are trying to get an exact angle of 42.3 degrees using a trackpad that keeps jumping you between 40 and 45 degrees. There are already so many barriers in place for learning 3D modeling and by providing our students with mice, one of the most aggravating obstacles has been removed!

As you have no doubt seen in the pictures, kids were already overjoyed to have the new tools. I have been using the mice as part of an incentive system where students rack up points in class for meeting or exceeding behavior expectations, then being able to use those points to "rent" mice for their 3D projects. This has helped immensely with key students who now have something tangible and real to spend their points on.

A wide range of students have already taken advantage of the mice for their chromebooks with other work. Not only do they use it for 3D modeling, but they have been using it for everyday work. Students who do not have regular access to computers at home sometimes struggle with navigating a chromebook with nothing but a trackpad. Having the mouse has already had a noticeable effect on their confidence in using the chromebook, increasing their buy-in. Having access to these tools has already been an immense help, so on behalf of all my students, thank you thank you thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. DeBois

  • 3D Dreaming: Young Engineers in STEM!

    Funded Nov 16, 2018

I can't express just how grateful I am for your continued support of our classroom and our students! I am firmly committed to using your generous donations and transforming those dollars into excitement around 3D printing and next-generation technical skills. I cannot wait to share their excitement with you!”

  • Humanity's Future: Colonizing Space Itself

    Funded May 2, 2017

Thank you for your generosity! Throughout this whole process, I received so many kind notes and comments from you and your families. To have that kind of support and encouragement from friends, families, and the community means the world to me here. I know that our students will greatly appreciate and enjoy this project and learning that comes with it.”

When I started as the 6th grade science teacher at HPCMS, I was given a specific mandate: get our students excited about science. Through the use of storylines, where our students take on the roles of epidemiologists, astrobiologists, urban planners, and NASA engineers, our students deeply engage with rigorous content and challenging ethical dilemmas. As young scientists, they immerse themselves in expeditions, which are long term projects that rewards students for their creativity, individuality, and ingenuity. The most popular of these expeditions involves generating a detailed and professional proposal for a space station in low-Mars-orbit. The proposal includes elements such as how to simulate artificial gravity and investigating the best use of space for growing food and generating oxygen. After nine weeks of work, the students then submit it to NASA for review and feedback. Thank you for your support!
