My students are inner city kids who come from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds, making my classrooms like a mini U.N. Many of the neighborhoods where they live are crime ridden, so they often write about how they seldom go outside. Some of them have never used anything apple, let alone an iPad. Mostly coming from lower socioeconomic levels, as well as single family homes, my students continue to smile, my classroom a safe haven for them to express themselves freely. However, the classroom's computer lab is a different story. Out of ten computers only four work (as slow as molasses) and out of twenty Internet jacks, only 2 work (I'm not sure if some were even installed correctly). The programs and software are outdated, and too worsen the situation, they cut all computer tech support jobs from our school. My students want to compete, but they want to compete on a level playing field. They want to produce portfolio pieces that can be viewed by thousands, something innovative.
