Feeling Out Of Balance... Can You Weigh In On This For Us?
Funded Feb 19, 2013This project was fully funded on the Tuesday during our winter break. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had already arrived when we returned that next Monday! My students were able to use the balances 4th period that day!
Having the two new balances that day allowed students to weigh their salts efficiently and accurately. This was particularly important for this lab because they had to then dissolve those salts into a specified amount of water which was time consuming... every minute counted!
We all appreciate your support of science education and thank you once again!”

Crucible, Not the Book!
Funded Aug 27, 2012Thank you for supporting my students by funding this project. It's important that the students have the appropriate equipment to work with so that they can obtain the best results possible. This particular lab needed taller crucibles so that the material would not spatter out of them during the reaction or during heating. They worked very well and the students obtained great results!
My students and I are truly appreciative of everyone who has supported our projects on here. They've had some incredible opportunities that might have been otherwise missed. Thank you again for your generosity!”

Can You Make My Organic Students Melt With Envy?
Funded Apr 19, 2012Thank you everyone for your donations! My students and I have been so impressed with this new melting point apparatus. It is so easy to use and multiple students are able to do their samples safely and with ease. No more hot oil and no more waiting!
I'd used a melting point apparatus in organic chem lab during college - and actually one of my students who is doing an independent study for organic chemistry got to use the same relic on a field trip. For obvious reasons, he did not like having to use a hot oil bath in school, and commented how much nicer this was. The unit which your donations helped purchase is far more superior than the ones we used at the college. This has a cooling fan so another sample can be performed within a few minutes of the first and it also hooks up to the computer so data is seen in real-time.
My A.P. Chemistry students have been finding the melting point of their aspirin that they made and some also found the melting point of caffeine that they extracted from tea. This is something that I didn't bother with in the past due to the safety aspect and the time involved. Now it's so easy that I will incorporate it into as many of their labs as practical.
Again, thank you! We are grateful to have so many people who care about furthering our students' learning and making our lab safer! ”

A.P. Chemistry Students Can Read Too!
Funded May 25, 2011My AP students and I want to thank you for your donations which made it possible to obtain these books. Reading a text can be very dry and boring, but these books - both based on true stories - gave a different perspective on chemistry. I will confess that "Uncle Tungsten" reminded me in parts of my own childhood and my tinkering, and the hope was that the students would find an interest in what may spark others' passions. "The Radioactive BoyScout" was just plain interesting given that the main character is very close in age to the students. They found it incredible what information and material he was able to obtain very freely from multiple sources!
With the latest push to boost student literacy, it is more important now to have material that engages students and that they will look forward to reading. Since many do not read for pleasure it was my hope that this could interest them to pick up a book and just read something for fun. Mission accomplished thanks to you! We are grateful for your contributions! ”

Funded Apr 30, 2009My students were very happy when I told them that the kits had been funded. They were very interested in the kit which involved testing over-the-counter drugs and simulated street drugs. We used that one first and I was surprised (and impressed) at the depth of the kits. They included simulated drugs which reacted with the same chemicals the police use in their field test kits. When the students saw the same color changes that they have seen on TV, that was pretty neat!
Though it was a little messy, the fingerprint kit was also fun to use. They took their fingerprints and then dusted various objects for prints and lifted them. It was fun comparing characteristics of the prints they made to the partial prints lifted.
Thank you for funding these kits which made the end of the year more exciting! The students really enjoyed using them and appreciated that people who don't even know them took an interest in their education! ”

Funded Jan 23, 2009My students were very excited when I told them that the proposal had been funded. They are eagerly awaiting receipt of the fuel cell car kits so that they may begin their assembly and experimentation. It is a great feeling to have people want to help my students and take an interest in their education. The students' attitude about learning from this experience has been very positive and well received, so I am anxious to see them work together on it. Thank you again for supporting my students with your donation!
