Given the socioeconomic background of my students, the need for a welcoming classroom is crucial. These young adults need a space where they can feel comfortable and free from some of the harsh stressors they face outside of school. With the appropriate supplies, my students will be able to see the classroom as a safe space where they look forward to spending time.
Although they may seem like materialistic things, the right materials can grant students tremendous emotional and physical security. By placing academic posters around the room, creating a comfortable library, and incorporating technology into teaching, not only will students be able to learn at any time, but they will treat the class as a place deserving of respect due to its many amenities. As a social studies teacher, I will rely heavily on maps and political posters to help build a foundation of students' knowledge of the world both around and behind them. As literacy teacher, and I hope to provide my students with a cozy library where they can lounge on bean bags while discovering new books they'll love forever. Having a personal mailbox for each student with the correct storage system will further grant the students a sense of belonging, while also giving them responsibility in staying organized.Additionally, when students need a brain break from their intensive studies, I want to give them the opportunity to do so with fun board games and relatively healthy snacks. As important as it is for students to focus on their academics, their social, emotional, and physical health cannot be neglected. By providing my students with what they need, from food for energy to games for relationship-building to speakers for listening to relaxing music, I hope that my classroom becomes a place where students want to spend their days.
