My students have many special and unique needs. They need a space in the class where they are able to feel safe and use various sensory objects when they may be struggling with their own emotions. These sensory objects help the students calm down and relax. Sensory toys for special needs students are very helpful for working on things such as hand-to-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills and social interaction. Providing the correct type of sensory materials for students is incredibly important to their development. Every day millions of students struggle with their unique needs and schools are beginning to incorporate more sensory materials for all students. Our classroom will have a sensory area where students are able to go each day. This will benefit their emotional and learning needs. Sensory toys are geared especially towards the development level of the student, and not the age of the student. This is because sensory toys that are meant for a child of a certain age may not be developmentally appropriate for a student with special needs. The fidget items chosen to assist students with managing anxiety and stress include: Washable Sensory Play Materials, Soft and Safe Sensory Balls, Mold and Play Moon Sand. The bean bags and chair balls will be used for various things around the classroom. They will be used in the sensory area as a place to sit in order to calm down or help release excess energy during emotional times. They will also be used during reading centers so that students may spread out around the room.
