Our classroom motto is "Read and write to right wrongs." My goal is to expose students to culturally relevant texts to engage them in discussions related to issues that impact their lives and communities. Students are willing to read and write if they connect to the texts they read. The goal of the course is to help them develop the skills and confidence to grapple with real world issues. Tenth grade is a difficult year for many of my students. It is the year where many decide whether or not to continue with their formal education. Research demonstrates that if a student feels validated, he or she is more likely to stay in school. The books and topics we explore help validate my students' experiences, and encourage them to seek solutions to the issues they face. The goal is to help them read and write to right wrongs!
