  • Novels In Verse Change the Reading Course

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

Thank you, donors, for supplying books to the “Novel and Verse to Change the Reading Course” project. Your support will help reluctant readers, by igniting a love for literature and boosting their confidence. Through the books I hope my kids will become avid bookworms, and be empowered for a brighter future. Your generosity made a real difference.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Owen

  • Surgery Word: A Writing Emergency

    Funded May 14, 2021

Thank you so much for helping my students with this awesome project, Surgery Word!!! They were so excited to dress the part of SURGEONS and work as a team to OPERATE on their writing pieces. I wish you could have felt the energy in the room as these kids brought life back into writing. This is a memory my students will treasure forever!!! One of my reluctant writers said, "I have always hated to write, but this was so much fun!" while she was in one of the Surgery Words. She may not be our next Gordon Korman, but she gained an appreciation for the process of writing. Helping her to find joy in something she found tedious in the past is exactly what this project was designed to do. I am so thankful for people, like you, who have supported my classroom and helped reluctant students find writing more engaging!!!”

  • ReMARKable Learning Is Taking Place

    Funded Mar 31, 2021

Thank you so much for the dry erase table that my students are getting to use everyday in different learning activities!!!

This year I have had the joy of moving up with several of my students, as my team changed from one grade level teaching all subjects to teaching both 5th grade and 6th grade English Language Arts. My returning students were so excited to see the table set up and ready to use in my room. They remembered when it was delivered at the end of last school year and were sad that they were not going to get to use it. Surprise to them! About half of my students were in my class last year and nearly every one had been in my room during special activities my team does throughout the year. They could not wait to get their dry erase markers out and write all over it. We have used it for spelling games, drawing story maps and even imagining what the setting of a book looks like.

One of the things my students think is the neatest is that I can sit on one side of the desk and write upside down!! Just one of the "teacher tricks" I can pull out of my hat to engage them. Thank you so much for the incredible gift that my students will enjoy for years to come!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Owen

  • The Beauty of Binders

    Funded Jun 10, 2021

Thank you for helping my students learn the BEAUTY OF BINDERS and get organized in the upcoming school year!! In the past my students have struggled with organization, but I know with the use of colored card stock for dividers and the bonus of the Classroom Economy, used to incentivize binder organization my students will be on top of it this year!! Thank you so much for supporting my students as we get organized!!”

  • Full STEAM Ahead

    Funded Apr 27, 2021

Wow! The iPad has been a creative tool in my classroom. My students have really enjoyed getting to create on it!! They love that they can look on the internet find a picture and simply snap it to use in their projects. We began starting out making iMovies which the kids loved doing!!! They researched the If/Then Collection and came up with a person with who they had an interest and then created a presentation. They took snapped pictures of their presentations and made the photos into an iMovie. I hope you enjoy seeing parts of what they created as much as they enjoyed creating and learning using the iPad!!! Thank you for supporting our classroom!!!”

    With gratitude,

  • Getting SMART Together

    Funded Feb 20, 2021

The day my Samsung Smart TV was installed my students were so excited to see what it was going to bring to the classroom!!! They could not wait to turn it on and begin to use it. The projector we have in our classroom made things hard for the students when we were trying to have digital lessons and live lessons simultaneously because of the low light the projector produced. With the Samsung Smart TV, all of the students can see the screen no matter where they are learning from!!

We have used it in many different ways: we have connected the Surface Pro (another DC project) and used it to make anchor charts as well the combo allows us to write on documents while it projects the work with exceptional clarity; we have used it to view classroom videos that go with the day's lesson and one benefit I was not expecting but has been a huge help, is having quality volume control. Computer speakers have nothing on The Samsung Smart TV! We have also used it to share videos the students have made for a Science project as well as using it on those rainy indoor recess days to entertain the students.

As we closed for the summer we looked at photos of the year and had fond memories of 5th grade. I cannot wait to see what next year holds and continue to learn how we can use the Samsung Smart TV to help my students continue to Getting SMART Together. Thank you for your support!!!”

  • I Will Not Quarantine Learning

    Funded Sep 24, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting my class by donating to I Will Not Quarantine Learning! We use the Microsoft Surface Pro every day in our class. One of the things I use it for is to project digital materials to my students; both my face to face students as well as my online students. Both groups can see lessons in realtime which is a game-changer! Before we had the Surface in our class my online students struggled to see what we were doing because they were watching our google meets using a Chromebook that faced the whiteboard where I was presenting a lesson. It was not ideal! The best and most used feature of the Surface Pro is that I can write on its screen with a stylus and that projects to all students in the classroom and online. I have also created digital escape rooms, mystery pictures, and many assessments using the Surface. What you have given to my classroom through your donation is the opportunity to continue learning during the pandemic. Thank you for helping me to Not Quarantine Learning!”

Teaching upper elementary students to love learning to read has become a passion of mine. I have fully embraced the idea that all kids can learn to love reading when they are exposed to a variety of books, topics, genres, and authors. It just takes that one book to turn a child into a reader. My hope is that it will be a book I have shared with them.
