My second graders have difficulties sitting in hard classroom seats all day every day. Adults would never put up with it! The Rug: A giant rug is the first step to offering them a different way to enjoy their classroom space and experiences. It will serve the dual purpose of providing a gathering spot for short, explicit lessons before they go to places in the room for practice/application as well offering a visual and tactile tool for learning world geography. The Storage Cart: There will be no desks in the room so it's essential to have a very organized way of storing student materials. Each student will have a portable bin to hold folders, journals, pencil bags, etc. They'll be on the move all day so portability and durability are essential. The storage carts also add some sorely needed counter space to our classroom, which has no existing counters, and the wheels on the carts make moving their items around the room extremely easy. A New Adventure: I'm excited to have the space to do more kinesthetic activities and to open up my lessons to activities that can't be accomplished with 25-odd desks crowding the room. I'm also excited to give students some variety throughout the day, which is certain to increase focus and performance. Social skills building and community awareness will be areas I'll be able to focus on more easily with concrete examples as students maneuver an environment where they must make the best choices for themselves as far as where and how they learn best. Working with others during many interactive lessons and activities also will hone their skills. I can demonstrate in real time what I'm talking about when I'm explaining how to communicate with someone in an effective way. It will be revolutionary!
