These books are about people, places, and events that are current and relevant. These books represent people, cultures, subcultures, and places that will broaden my students' horizons and allow them to engage with the world around them in a meaningful way. Studies say that reading, especially about people different from you, fosters empathy, understanding, and emotional intelligence. “Fiction is about what it means to be human" -Author David Foster Wallace. Reading these books will help my students understand other people, places, and cultures outside of the small town they live in. I believe that my students will greatly benefit from these books being placed on the shelves of my classroom. My students are never forced to read an independent reading book they are not interested in. A diverse classroom library allows EVERY reader and EVERY student to find something they are interested in and want to learn more about.
