As a teacher in a Chicago neighborhood school where 99% of the students qualify as low-income and only 28% meet or exceed expectations for grade level mathematics, my mission is to ground everyday classroom work with tangible real-world applications. This is my first year teaching at this school, so I do not yet know who my students and families are. I do know that when introduced into the world of number manipulations and geometric sketches, the abstract can seem intangible and overwhelming. Concrete examples change our perceptions and develop pathways in the brain. We can then see solutions more easily and obtain conceptual understanding. As the only middle school math teacher, I need to ensure the rigor is there for my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students by allowing them to explore and develop their own connections with mathematics. In order to do this, students must physically participate with the mathematical concepts in a highly organized classroom stocked with relevant materials.
