  • Encouraging a Love of Reading

    The book rack you bought for our class really made a difference in the use of our classroom library. The students were so excited to put all of the books in the rack. while doing that, they would stop and look at all of the books. Several students chose books to read that they probably would not have known were there if not for organizing the rack. After the rack was set up, it was all I could do to keep the students from standing at it all day checking out all the books! The book rack really helped me visually display the books in a way which enticed the students to use the library more and hence to read more. I look forward to many years of encouraging reading in my class through the use of the book rack.

  • Help Modernize My Classroom's Technology!

    My class and I greatly appreciate your donation which helped us get a wonderful laptop for our classroom. We have been using it for many subjects. Primarily, we have been using it for math. Before we do the lessons in class, I show the students the DVD introductory lessons that came with our math program. I find that the students understand the math lessons better after having the opportunity to view the DVD intro lessons. There are also quizzes and other resources that require a computer which are part of our math program. All of these resources enhance the lessons and help the students gain a deeper understanding of the lessons.

    We also have used the laptop for unit openers in our language arts program. I am able to show short videos and images to help students understand the topic of our unit. I show them PowerPoint presentations of grammar and vocabulary that go with our language arts program. There are many things for which the laptop has been and will be used. Additionally, it is also used as an extra resource on which students can play learning games that go along with units that we are studying in various academic areas.

    Right now the students are writing big research papers and the laptop has been used to look up sources for their research. For example, we have checked the public library to see if there were books there on the students' topics. We have even reserved books for the students online. The students will also be able to use it to write their reports and find online images to print and use in their projects.

    The laptop has also been instrumental in helping me keep in close contact with the parents of the students in my class. I use it to send out e-mails and to type up letters and information for parents. The laptop has already gotten a lot of use this year and it will continue to get a lot of use in following years.

We have very few supplies and there is definitely no money to be spent on updating, fixing, or getting new technology in the classrooms. Most of my students come from homes where they don't have computers because they can't afford them. They are 5th graders who will be going to middle school next year and will be expected to know how to do research on the Internet, use word processing programs to write papers, and create presentations using technology. I want to provide them with the opportunity to learn how to do these things. The class is very enthusiastic and sweet. They enjoy being active learners and are excited at the prospect of learning how to use technology.
