Thanks for choosing my students! My kids are usually at least 1-3 grade levels behind in reading, so getting them comfortable with words is a struggle. They don't have a lot of empathy with people from history, it's not real to them, until they realize people have had the same sorts of problems throughout history. They need to read, and they need to read words that can inspire them to make their own history. We're in Michigan, so budget cuts have kept us from having new textbooks for American History for the last 15 years, besides the attitude that "history doesn't change". This year there was no money budgeted for teacher supplies or textbooks, so I'm not able to copy excerpts because it takes away from me being able to copy other supplements to make up for what our books are lacking. We need books. We need students to feel a connection with the world around them, and what came before them.
