Break the Code with Botley!
Funded May 10, 2018Excitement was in the air as we started our STEM club this month. The students were eager to be meeting again, and this year we had some new materials. The students are thrilled to have coding robots that do not require an IPAD. We have a larger number of younger students in STEM club this year, and we need to have materials that work well for them. They love Botley.
We are working on getting our students to explore coding at higher and higher levels. While we are poised to stretch our older students to start learning to use raspberry pi materials, we are wanting to get the youngest students to get the desire to code by having fun and interactive materials.
Botley really seems to grab their attention. They are able to program the robot to do a series of moves. The student program the remote and then send Botley on his mission.
Thank you so much for helping us with this project! We greatly appreciate it!”

Mrs. Cobb

Funded Aug 31, 2018It is very rare for us to be able to impact two distinct populations of students in our district. This project was just such a project. Thanks to the Home Show Coalition (Pearl Jam, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Raikes Foundation, and Deutsche Bank) and very generous donors (Laura, Amy, and some whose name I do not know) this project came to life.
I have a deep desire to help those who are really struggling in life. With the never ending challenges that teens face, we have many that are homeless. While many end up on the streets, at friend's houses, or other locations. A few lucky students end up at our community's teen shelter. They provide so much more than shelter. They have an adjacent facility where local teens can come for recreation and a safe place to be. The center is always in need of basic items for the teens.
Our kindness club focuses on doing kind deeds to others. We decided to make a bag for the teens at the shelter. This project contains a blanket, comb, toothbrush/toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and an encouraging hand-made card for the teens. When young students actively participate in giving to others, they learn the joy that comes from helping those in need.
Thank you so much for this special match! It helped some very needy students.”

Funded May 23, 2018There are so many applications for 3D printing today. We have had a printer, but our filament was not working and we needed new filament. The students are very excited to be back to printing!
Our STEM club has been learning how to use Thingiverse to design their own projects, or to modify existing ones. This teaches them a lot of skills that will be useful for future classes in high school and in college. Our city has a high demand for STEM skills.
We have also been able to use the 3D printer to print replacement parts for our paper towel dispenser. This saves the district a lot of money.
Without donors like you, schools would not have the opportunity to use technology like this!
We are very thankful for those who donated and helped us get this project completed! It is appreciated by all our students and staff!”

Funded Apr 22, 2018My students just love Osmo Pizza Party! It is hard to get students excited about learning how to pay for things they buy, make change, or other money skills. We had some other Osmo games, and the students really liked, so we wanted to try Pizza Company. The students love making their pizzas, pretending to sell them, and making change. The games can also work together, allowing for some cooperative learning.
We are so impressed with this, that I wrote a grant to enable us to get more for our k-2 students. It is my hope that all of our primary students will be able to access these games during classroom instruction. This project let us test out the materials to ensure that they really motivate students. In the meantime, we are using these sets with STEM club and our 2nd grade classrooms.
We really appreciate your donations that allowed us to get the materials. Without this help, we would not have been able to provide out students with such great materials.”

Funded Jan 12, 2018Thank you for helping us get the Go Pro Hero! We have so many ideas on how we can use it!. Our STEM club wants to attach it too our robots and video their movements. We can also use it to document our activities in STEM club. Some of the classroom teachers are eager to try to use it during their science experiments, others to document student presentations.
Our 3rd graders do a swimming unit. The Go Pro Hero can go under water, so they want to take it with them next time and get some underwater pictures.
So many different ways we can use this! I think almost every encore and regular class can finds ways to use it. The compact size offers many opportunities! We also have a Makerbot. I would like to video the creation of some of out projects.
Thank you again for your donation to our school. We have so much local support for this project. Parents and community members, and others from Missouri. Craig Newmark Philanthropies matched this project and helped bring it home! I am eager to share some of our pictures.”

Funded Mar 16, 2018Thank you for your help with this project. We are gearing up for career/STEM day, and we will need these materials. In the meantime we are utilizing them every Monday for Stem Club.
The students love all of these centers. Bloxels allows the students to build scenes and characters, take pictures, and then incorporate them into a video game.
Dash robots are great for students to learn to code! Even the younger students are able to start coding. We do not let the just "drive" the robot. They have to do the coding.
MakeyMakey is great for students to do coding and incorporate everyday objects to use as keyboard keys. They really enjoy trying different objects to see how they work.
In all the centers we have students that have more experience helping those that are just learning the skills. We also have parents that come into help. By the time our career/STEM day comes, we will have students ready to help with the rotations.
Thank you for your donations and help. I can assure you that the students are enjoying the materials and learning a lot. I truly appreciate the opportunity to help students learn to love STEM! I have had more than one student tell me they wished we had STEM club every morning.”

Ready, Set, Stop Action!
Funded Feb 21, 2018Craig Newmark, you have brought this project home. You have helped so many, and several times have helped me. This project is really special. The students at our school love stop-action story telling and movie making. We will be using stop action at our STEM/Career day that is coming up. We really did not have enough materials for the classes to use as they rotated through the stations.
We now will have a lot of different materials for them to chose from. Some of the materials include multicultural figures, which is important for students of various backgrounds. There are also different generations, pets, and careers represented. For students to tell their story, they need to be able to relate with the materials.
I am anxious to see what the student do with these materials. Thank you for allowing them to tell their unique story.
I truly appreciate all you have done for me.”

Funded Jan 26, 2018M. Farmer and 37 People, my heart is so full of thanks for you bringing this project home, along with the match by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
The Monday morning after our materials arrived the STEM club was wild with excitement. They had been trying to share some Lego Architecture sets, and there were just not enough. That day they had plenty to chose from. Even with many other materials in the STEM club, there are some that really love Lego Architecture. Several want to be Architects.
They proudly build their masterpieces, then take pics to share on our STEM padlet page so others can see what they do.
These sets are really important to my students. I am eager to share some of the pictures we have taken!
I wish you could be there as the students use them!
Thank you so much.”

Funded Nov 14, 2017There are some topics that are very difficult to deal with. When faced with dealing with these type of situations, it is important to have materials that help students understand themselves and how to deal with how other people treat them.
It is not easy to find materials that appeal to students and help them as they process tough topics. I really appreciate your help as we try to process topics that many are afraid to talk about.
I am so happy that I have materials that will help the students gain a better understanding of themselves.
Thank you again for your help. It is greatly appreciated.”

Funded Nov 17, 2017Thank you so much helping us with materials for our students. The students whose parents are deployed love the journals. They provide some great starter topics for the students to write about. It really helps them process the feelings that they have when their parents are gone.
We have a group of students using the "Responsible me" materials. It is helping them learn much needed skills. Many of our students just do not have the skills that are needed. Having some materials to help is very important.
The Study skills materials fill a much needed gap in our curriculum. It is important for students to learn skills to help them achieve in school. This book helps with some very important skills.
The other resource, about using digital technology is important in today's world. Students need to be taught skills to stay safe.
Thank you for helping with these materials. We really appreciate it!”
