I teach 4th grade students that are second language learners; I realize that my students do not understand everything I say. I use body language, visuals, manipulative, and expressive intonation to communicate my meaning. In 4th grade it is common for students to speak in their native language with their peers, but when responding to teacher I want them to speak in English. As the year progress, students naturally use more English in the classroom. To draw students into using the language, I often use music and movement, songs, poems, and Nursery rhymes to teach the language. We live in a boarder town in Arizona, were in some cases I am the only English they hear.
