For National Poetry Month I would like for my students to become poets themselves. In the past, I've focused on teaching specific types of poetry and having my students write examples of each. Only one small piece of my unit would focus on free verse because writing free verse is something that I struggle with as a writer. However, it was during this small period of time that I saw my students writing come alive on paper. Never before have they had the opportunity to express themselves in such a way. This year I would like the focus of my poetry unit to be on expression through free verse poetry. My students have a lot to say and I am hoping to give them the opportunity to express themselves in a whole new way.
