I will be the first primary grade teacher to integrate a flexible seating model in the classroom! I have already began using my own money to begin to build a better classroom environment for my students in the classroom library area and in the guided learning area. I realized my students loved visiting these areas just to be able to sit in the special seating. It has been a huge success! There is nothing more beautiful than seeing young students engaged in reading and questioning text as they partner read. Just think, this all came about because of something so simple as comfortable seating! I think about sitting in the same hard seats at the beginning of each school year for professional development day after day. Most of the time I wish I could get up and move around, so I can pay better attention. Therefore, I can imagine how my students feel when they are subjected to sitting in the same seats most of the day. Study shows that children need to be able to move often and even have a change of pace, rather than doing the same thing, day after day. Seating options in the classroom is no different! Flexible seating would allow my students to choose how they would like to sit while completing their work. They could sit on the floor on a cozy chair of mat, sit on a wobble chair that would give them the freedom of movement and a chance to get their wiggles out, or even a comfy beanbag chair at a lowered table. Giving my class the option to choose where they would like to sit and how they would like to sit, would allow them to stay more engaged and focused, therefore, enhancing their ability to learn each day.
