I teach at a middle school in SW FL. The school is over 92% free & reduced lunch. About 75% of our students do not speak English as their primary language in the home. Over 85% of our kids are either Spanish or Haitian. Despite so many obvious disadvantages, our student body is simply delightful. They work hard and they play hard. With media being what it is today, they are quite aware of what they don't have. They also seem to appreciate things my own children wouldn't. For example I acquired two digital cameras from Versicle for the kids to use on their Science Fair projects. They are quite old and much larger and bulkier than modern ones. I love seeing the look on their faces when I tell them they can take one home to use for their project. I don't think many adults in their lives place that sort of trust in them. Having the privilege of being an adult in their lives that believes in them is it's own reward.
