As one of the schools in a nationwide six-year social-emotional learning study (PSELI), our campus curriculum emphasizes the development of self-control and persistence in our instruction. As a way of fostering focus, concentration, and self-awareness in my students, I strive to limit distracting stimuli in my classroom. In that regard, one strategy that's proven to be beneficial is providing headphones to each of my fifth-graders—especially during assessments—as a tool to reduce noise and support their developing sense of mental focus. Unfortunately, we must share several older (designed for audio) headphones among multiple classes which too often leaves them unavailable when needed. To have high-quality, purpose-built earmuffs, ready to be used every day, would be a godsend to my students.
